Kocaeli University was first established in 1976 as The Kocaeli Academy of Engineering and Architecture Faculty with Electrical and Mechanical Departments, Basic Sciences Department and Department of Modern Languages, and after developed as a faculty of Yıldız Technical University under the name of Kocaeli Faculty of Engineering. With the Turkish Government decision on establishing 22 new universities in July 1992, Kocaeli University became an independent institution on 3rd July, 1992 under the Law No: 3837.

Kocaeli University has over 50,000 students and academic staff of more than 1700, with 57 undergraduate programmes in 10 faculties, and 74 master and 34 PhD programmes in 3 graduate schools. Besides, there are 18 vocational training schools and 6 colleges within the institution. The academic year of the University is composed of two semesters, the first term generally begins on the last week of September and ends in the middle of January and second one begins in the middle of February and ends in mid June.
